Kolkata, 22 June 2025: To celebrate World Music Day, Manipal Hospital, Saltlake, organized a heart-touching programme hosted and curated by Dr. Ansu Sen, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Manipal Hospitals, Saltlake, where the healing power of music was interwoven with the science of healing. To commemorate the therapeutic power of music, the hospital will soon introduce Music Therapy for patients fighting neurological disorders. The celebration brought together neuro patients, caregivers, doctors, and musicians in a moving session that underscored how rhythm, tone, and harmony can become powerful allies in treatment and recovery. The occasion was graced by renowned vocalist Indrani Sen and acclaimed musician Shamik Pal, who shared heartfelt reflections on the role of music in healing.
Music therapy programme marks a significant step towards holistic healing, realizing how rhythm, sound, and melody can positively affect neurological recovery. With solid clinical evidence to back it up, music therapy has been found to engage cognitive processing, facilitate speech and language function in stroke patients, gait and balance in Parkinson's patients, and symptoms of depression and agitation in Alzheimer's patients. It fosters emotional resilience and socialization, which helps contribute to quality-of-life improvement in long-term neurological disease patients.
Indrani Sen, known for her soul-stirring voice and deep commitment to mental wellness, remarked,
"Music has the extraordinary ability to reach places within us that words cannot. For those dealing with anxiety, depression, or long-term neurological challenges, music therapy can be a beacon. As per the World Health Organization, India is home to over 56 million people battling depression. This initiative by Manipal Hospital Salt Lake is a timely and compassionate step towards integrated mental health care."
Shamik Pal, an acclaimed musician, shared, "Music has long been recognized as a tool for emotional and psychological healing. The initiative to introduce music therapy as part of neurological care is a commendable and forward-thinking move. It is heartening to see a healthcare institution acknowledging the transformative power of music in the journey of recovery."
While talking about the initiative, Dr. Ansu Sen, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Manipal Hospitals, Salt Lake, shared, "Music has always been a part of me. Throughout these years, I have experienced how music can softly rouse hope and bring peace to even the most troubled minds. Through this program, we aim to set aside a place where healing transcends medication and touches the heart. Music therapy is not a substitute but a complementary therapy that can really boost the overall recovery process of our patients."
