Kolkata, 27 December, 2025: Desun Hospital achieved a significant milestone in advanced cardiac care with the successful implantation of its first leadless pacemaker, often referred to as the “invisible pacemaker.” This breakthrough further strengthens Desun’s commitment to global standards of quality care, patient safety and clinical excellence, attested in its recent JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation.
The procedure was conducted by Dr Avik Karak, Consultant, Interventional Cardiology, under the guidance of Dr Sajib Kumar Patra, Director, Cardiology, Desun Hospital, and renowned Interventional Cardiologist, Dr P.K. Hazra, who acted as Proctor for the first ever leadless pacemaker implantation at Desun. The procedure was performed on a middle-aged female patient, suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD), who had a life-saving arteriovenous (AV) fistula on her left arm for dialysis.
Dr Karak explained that the patient’s fistula was degenerating and needed to be preserved at all costs. “For this patient, safeguarding existing and supplementary veins was crucial for future dialysis access. A conventional pacemaker could have compromised these veins. The leadless pacemaker offered the safest and most appropriate solution, which the patient’s family readily accepted,” he said.
Dr Hazra, a pioneer in Eastern India of various such innovative cardiac procedures, pointed out that the Medtronic single-chamber leadless pacemaker used in this case, weighs only about two grams and is implanted through a catheter-based procedure that takes less than 30 minutes. “It requires only a small incision, leaves no visible scar, which is often a concern for many women, and carries an almost negligible risk of pacemaker pocket infection. The device is nearly undetectable on routine imaging, while MRI and other scans can be performed safely. With a battery life of 15–17 years, it represents a major leap forward in patient-friendly cardiac technology,” he said.
Dr Patra emphasized the future potential of leadless pacing technology. “We already have dual-chamber leadless pacemakers, and within the next five years, technology may evolve to a point where a patient might need only one intervention in a lifetime. With minimal scarring, insignificant risk of complications, and near invisibility, it is an exciting future for our patients,” he stated. With this first leadless pacemaker implantation, Desun Hospital continues to set new benchmarks in advanced, patient-centric cardiac care, combining technological innovation with globally accredited safety standards, he added.
